St. Mary’s Medical Center offers a variety of clinical rotations to medical students enrolled in United States medical schools. We are not approved by the California Medical School Board to accept students or observers from foreign medical schools.

St. Mary’s has student affiliation agreements with both the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and with Creighton School of Medicine. Most ward and ICU teams, and many specialty rotations, have 1-2 students at any given time.

Core rotations and electives are available through either the UCSF Student Program or through St Mary’s directly:

Longitudinal Clinical Experience LCE Course (ID #111) - 22 sessions in the Continuity Clinic of the Sr. Mary Philippa Health Center.

Visiting Students

St. Mary’s does not provide lodging, parking, stipends, liability insurance, or uniforms for students on clerkships. 

Requirements

  • Health Insurance: You are required to document that you have health insurance on your application.

  • Malpractice Insurance: You must show proof that your home school covers you for Malpractice Insurance. Minimum coverage: $1,000,000 per incident/ $3,000,000 aggregate.

  • HIPAA: You must demonstrate that you have received training in HIPAA requirements through your school before you may see patients at St Mary’s.  Special arrangements to provide this training can be made by contacting Deborah Valle.

  • White Coats: You are required to bring your own white coat since one must be worn at all times during patient contact. We do not provide coats.

  • Medical School ID: You must bring your medical school photo ID with you. Your medical school ID along with the ID issued to you by the Medical Education Department will grant you registered student status at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

How to Apply

Please first confirm with the Dean’s office of your medical school that you will receive credit for the rotation at St. Mary’s. Apply as early as possible to be certain that the rotation is available for the time you have available. St. Mary’s is unable to sponsor observorships and cannot accept applications from non-US medical school students.

For UCSF rotations offered at St. Mary’s, you must apply through the UCSF Department of Medicine Student Program Office call (415) 476-1964 for further details; a fee for application is required.

For St. Mary’s Medical Center rotations, please fill out our application (application info) to ensure that you receive the time slot you need. To save time have your medical school fax materials to (415) 750-8149; address fax to Attn: Kathy Banks.

Fees: U.S. visiting students who are applying through St. Mary’s Medical Center will be charged a non-refundable processing fee of $100.00 for each four-week elective scheduled. Checks (only) should be made payable to St. Mary’s Internal Medical Education Department.  (Note: this applies to rotations in Orthopedics, Spine Center, PM&R, and General Medicine)

Registration:  At 8:45 am on the first day of your elective, you must register with the Department of Medical Education, 2235 Hayes Street (on the 4th floor), San Francisco. You will be issued a pager and visiting student identification cards that will give you access our hospital, library and cafeteria.
