At St. Mary's, residents can create their
own electives in consultation with the chief residents and faculty. In
general, interns have 2 electives and residents have 4 electives over
their final 2 years. Residents may choose among the following
rotations:
- Anesthesia (St. Mary's): Inpatient Rotation focusing on teaching
of line placement, intubations and pre-and postoperative evaluation.
- Cancer Research: An opportunity to explore bench research with Dr.
Li Xi Yang, our Director of Academic Research and Radiation Biologist.
- Cardiology (St. Mary's): Inpatient
and outpatient rotation with Dr. Remo Morelli. First hand consultations
in a busy hospital service and join Dr. Morelli in his private practice
and in the cath lab. They will also see patients referred to the cardiology
clinic by their peers in the Sr. Mary Phillipa Health Center.
- Emergency Medicine (St. Mary’s): An ambulatory month
of emergency medicine during which the resident may rotate on the “ surgical side” of
the ED.
- Endocrinology (SFGH): A mostly outpatient
rotation at San Francisco General Hospital under the supervision of
the endocrine fellow and attending faculty. Subspecialty clinics include
Diabetes, Lipid, Thyroid, and General Endocrinology. In addition, the
resident will participate in the hospital consult service.
- Gastroenterology (St. Mary's): Mostly inpatient rotation with Dr.
Kevin Man. First hand consultations after review of all cases with Dr.
Man. In addition residents attend the very busy GI and hepatology clinic
at the Sr. Mary Phillipa Health Center.
- Hematology/Oncology (SFGH): Almost entirely inpatient consultation
service under the supervision of the fellow and attending faculty.
- Hematology/Oncology (St. Mary's): Inpatient and outpatient consultation
with Dr. Robert Weber. First hand consultation after review and discussion
of all cases with Dr. Weber. The resident also joins Dr. Weber in the
Northern California Melanoma Clinic.
- Infectious Disease (St. Mary's): Mostly
inpatient rotation with Dr. Jose Eguia. Consultations on selected patients,
and rounding daily attending of the City TB clinic and reading time
in ID.
- Nephrology (SFGH) : Inpatient consultation service under the supervsion of the renal
fellow and attending faculty.
- Nephrology (St. Mary's) : Inpatient
and outpatient consultation rotation with Dr.Robert Tseng and his associates
at St. Mary’s and in his private practice.
First hand consultation after review and discussion of cases with
the attending.
- Office-based Practice (St. Mary's): One-month block designed for
residents planning to enter primary care. Several community physicians
offer this rotation and give the resident the opportunity to experience
the daily live of a busy private practice.
- Ophthalmology (St. Mary's): Outpatient rotation with Dr. Kevin Lee.
- Pathophysiology of Critical Care (St.
Mary's): A selected reading
and review elective with Dr. Anthony Cosentino, Chief of Academic Medicine.
Daily rounding in the ICU and participation in teaching to the MICU
team.
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (St.
Mary's): Participation
in the multidisciplinary team of the Acute Rehab Unit; includes daily
rounds with the Medical Director Dr.Wakasa and the residents from the
Stanford PM and R program. Clinics include post-polio and multiple
sclerosis. Residents also work with occupational and physical therapists.
- Radiology (St. Mary's): Outpatient
rotation with Dr. James Gorder shared with The Critical Care/Pathophysiology
reading elective.
- Rheumatology (Alameda County Medical Center): Mostly all outpatient
rotation with Dr. Michael Neuwelt in his own practice and in the arthritis
clinic of the county hospital.
- Urgent Care (St. Mary's SMPHC): Outpatient ambulatory block in our “walk-in” clinic.
The resident encounters and treats common acute medical problems under
the supervision of clinic teaching faculty.
- Women's Health Rotation: A multidisciplinary
rotation that includes primary care of women, breast care and bone
health, and is held at St. Mary's and South of Market Health Center.
