to teach high-school science and French, she returned to California for graduate
school, publishing extensively in neurobiology before entering medical school
and internal medicine residency at UCSF. After a fellowship in General Internal
Medicine and Medical Education under Dr. Stephen Schroeder, she served as the
Director of Ambulatory Training and subsequently assumed the roles of Program
Director and Director of Housestaff Education. Dr. Mendelson founded and directed
the country’s first residency program in Internal Medicine/Evidence-Based
Medicine. She has developed widely-disseminated curricula in Ambulatory Medicine,
Evidence-Based Medicine, Women’s Health and Geriatrics, has led numerous
national meetings and workshops on clinical and educational topics, and has
won seven major teaching awards. She joined the St. Mary’s faculty in

A native of Austria, Dr. Block graduated from the University of Vienna
Medical School. She completed her internship and residency training at

fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at UCSF, she joined
the key faculty at St. Mary’s Medical Center in 1994. She developed
a comprehensive outpatient diabetes education program and currently serves
as it’s medical director. Under Dr. Block’s leadership, the
residents’ continuity clinic has transformed from a traditional model
to a group practice model that delivers comprehensive primary care to an
urban underserved diverse patient population. She strongly believes that
state of the art care must be delivered in a one tier system to every citizen,
be he or she indigent, the working poor or the well insured. Dr.Block continues
to be on staff at UCSF where she attends a weekly high risk OB clinic for
women with endocrine conditions. She is board certified in endocrinology
