Q: How will our training program meet your professional and career development needs?

A: Designer electives” may be arranged in consultation with the chief residents and Program Director. The resident is required to submit a rotation schedule and a list of objectives and goals prior to such an individualized rotation. A limited number of off campus rotations are permitted so long as they are planned and submitted well in advance and deemed educationally beneficial to the resident’s professional development by the program director. We believe that core subspecialty training is crucial for the education of a general internist, hence we strongly encourage those rotations.

A formal mentorship program plays an integral role in our training program. All core faculty members function as mentors and meet with their mentees on a regular basis. They help guide and advise residents in their professional development career planning throughout the three years of the residency.

Q: Where will you gain ambulatory medicine experience?

Many subspecialties have an ambulatory care portion and some are predominantly office based. In total residents spend approximately 35-40% of their time in the outpatient setting including continuity clinic, and urgent care medicine. For residents planning to enter primary care, a 3-month continuity experience in a private practice in addition to the weekly continuity clinic is encouraged during the senior year. Many seniors will spend a one-month primary care elective in the private office of one of our community physicians.

Q: How much overnight call duty will you have as a resident?

A: The supervising resident takes call every fourth during ward months and has overnight call duty on weekends only. A night float resident is also in the house admitting to the ICU from 7:30 PM until 7:30 AM. This resident provides back up and support during busy call nights.

Q: How much supervision and teaching experience will you gain as a resident?

A: As leaders of the general medicine and critical care teams, PGY 2/3 residents supervise and teach interns and students, conduct work rounds and sign-out rounds. Each resident is expected to give one formal Morbidity and Mortality Conference and to present one scholarly topic at weekly Grand Rounds.

Q: Will you have enough research opportunity during your residency?

A: Clinical research is strongly encouraged and supported. Over the two years of residency, up to two months of research may be approved provided that this activity leads to a publication, abstract or poster presentation at a regional or national meeting. Faculty members are available to mentor all research projects. (click on Research button for more information).
