The Internal Medicine Program at St. Mary's Medical Center offers training in Internal Medicine with an individualized approach in the collegial setting of our university-affiliated community hospital.

Our well-rounded and rewarding three-year categorical internal medicine program prepares graduates for careers in primary care, Hospitalist medicine, and academic medicine. Our graduates are consistently recruited into academic fellowship training in the internal medical specialties. We also offer one-year preliminary medicine training in preparation for careers in diverse specialties such as radiology, anesthesiology, physical medicine/rehabilitation, ophthalmology, neurology, and dermatology.

St. Mary’s sponsors highly competitive residencies in orthopedic surgery (www.sforp.org) and podiatry, and is a core-training site for the Stanford University Hospital program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In all programs, our residents enjoy a wide range of educational experiences at our own campus, the hospitals of UCSF, Alameda County Medical Center, and in the offices of our community-based faculty. Training opportunities include:

  • Electives at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) for all three years of residency
  • Core rotations at UCSF and SFGH in emergency medicine, ward medicine, hematology/oncology, nephrology, endocrinology and neurology
  • Private office experiences with respected San Francisco internists
  • Continuity primary care in a well-organized multispecialty clinic serving a diverse patient population
  • Ample opportunity for research in clinical quality and basic science areas
  • Sufficient elective time to pursue intensive training in medical specialties in preparation for fellowship
